The BYOD activity that I have chosen came from an online Google search. Looking for a new approach for students to practice their oral speaking skills Hilda, an English Literacy teacher, designed an activity using BYOD, specifically tablets. The focus was to create an activity that would be easily repeated each year without having to secure or reserve school equipment. Since students were aware of the operations of their own equipment this would avoid any technical issues for teacher and the school. What I found interesting was that the school did not have Wi-Fi so students had no access to the internet which tends to be one of the key concerns with BYOD. The activity revolved around the students utilizing the recording and playback features of their device to work individually and one on one to assess their pronunciations and intonations. The activity allowed students to work with a device they were comfortable with and gave them an opportunity to collaborate and work with other students. Some of the key challenges we see with BYOD involve the technical aspect as well as the distraction to other apps or social media. Some of these were not of a concern and from what the teacher reported as far as positive student engagement she didn’t find that the devices were much of a distraction and instead were an aid to her student’s learning. I think the fact that this was also an adult based class the difference in engagement and interaction within the class is more than that of your typical high school. However, without the access to Wi-Fi this would limit the distractions to which student tends to fall into. I think this activity was well thought out and she had a good strategy and lesson plan around the utilization of BYOD.
